Warning for TQG rant. I am just writing this up here so I can just link the essay the next time somebody claims that "Benny begged Beth to come back to New York multiple times." This is usually cited as evidence that Beth was cruelly tossing out his heart, and therefore mostly to blame for their split.

I disagree with this idea on so many levels, but let's start with the oft-cited evidence.

Cut for pedantic detail )
nrgburst: (beth claws)
So TQG fandom is now a year old (yay!) and is still hanging in there, which I think is pretty good for a "one hit wonder" kind of canon? Like it's not getting a season 2; there are no spin-offs etc., so the fact that it's still going is pretty remarkable, IMO. But I think it's definitely shrinking, and it has been pretty much since the beginning - it basically hit its zenith of fandom content production and engagement in its first couple of months, and since I've been writing/GIFfing for the fandom since almost the beginning, I can actually track the dramatic fall in kudos/comments and likes/reblogs of GIFsets with actual numbers. And I think attrition like this is totally normal and a well-established cross-fandom pattern? Most people get interested in new things and move on to other fandoms (I think the Hot Fandom Property is Squid Game RN), and a few people will enter the fandom late, like a revolving door where the trend is usually more out than in over time. But I also know fandoms that are still chugging along strong despite their canons ending years ago, and I think the key to retaining people is robust positive feedback for content creators. And I think that's lagging in TQG fandom, and I worry that it's actually because of the discord server I helped make in the first place.😬

So I noticed this weird thing when I posted the last chapter of An Exchange of Kings: unlike literally every other longfic I have ever written, there were fewer comments on the last chapter than the penultimate one. Even people who had been commenting all along did not check in with their opinion about the ending - they just clicked the link to the server in the final A/N and started chatting in the server instead. Which. Ow. I should have expected that but didn't.🥲 They wanted the instant feedback of conversation (and maybe a GIF battle in general or to talk in all channels at once - it was INSANE, like 100+ unread messages in all channels. As one of two mods at the time, I wanted to cry at how impossible that job had instantly become and how I'd done it to myself! 😅) But it's a pattern of engagement that has seemed to continue even for authors/fanartists that don't do this?

The pattern is: person posts link to fic/art on server, people on the server look at linked thing then CLICK BACK OUT and emoji react to/maybe reply to the poster ON THE SERVER. They rarely leave anything other than a like or kudos on the actual creator's work, even the original poster.

What's interesting is, I've noticed this isn't true for other fandoms that I'm also in servers for? There is a robust comment culture in Ted Lasso, Miraculous Ladybug, Lucifer, MCU and Gendrya (GoT) fandoms, for example (yes, even now, more than two years after that ending!) and the communities thrive, and a great deal more content is constantly produced. This makes total sense to me: when you post fic/art, getting positive feedback on it helps you feel seen; talking to people about your creation/the canon is rewarding. So you are more inclined to stick around and create more for these people giving you the feedback. And most creators (especially fan artists) are not on the server, and even for those who are, I can say that from personal experience, a server comment isn’t the same as one on your actual fic/set/etc.? It's very "words are wind" and completely gone in a couple of days, because the conversation obviously moves on.

So what's the difference in how these fandom cultures grew, and more importantly: is it possible to change a fandom culture like this? Do any of you have experience reviving a fandom/encouraging engagement? Obviously, the server still helps us make some content: just see the fic I posted last month off somebody else's prompt. But I think we need to change or we're going to end up in dead fandom territory soon, especially since we've had (Dramatically) shrinking numbers of people on the server, too.😓 I've been trying to Be the Change, but I just don't think one or two people commenting is enough, and TBH, it feels like a Sisyphean task, like bailing out a sinking ship with cupped hands. So how, oh how do we get us a bucket already?

Any thoughts, oh f-list? I think a lot of you have been in fandom longer than me, and I would welcome any suggestions. I've been thinking of hosting a giveaway on the server with "entries" being comments on fic/art. Is that weird? Does it feel transactional? Or would you be excited about something like that? Also, do you think it would help form the habit of leaving feedback for authors/artists, or at least entice you to try facing the anxiety/intimidation if you'd never done it before? I'm basing this off how I give extrinsic rewards to students to achieve more at say, an extensive reading program - eventually they do it to kind of compete with themselves/each other rather than needing the candy, but they sure do like the Haribo at first! 😅
nrgburst: (watney do the math)
I've been seeing lots of discussion about tagging recently on tumblr, discord and my f-list, ever since AO3 announced its decision to limit tags to 75. I think most of it is thoughtful and productive - I think awareness leads to people acting more thoughtfully (although as [personal profile] wheatear  has pointed out, there's no such thing as perfect tagging, though I'd argue that being aware of how and why people use tags in your fandom can certainly lead to "better" tagging. And I think the reason that AO3 made this decision is obvious: there's actually such a thing as "bad" tagging

I think the most obvious offenders are like manspreaders on trains - it's not egregiously harmful that they're taking up more space than others, but it can still be a real nuisance (and may present significant obstacles to some, like those using a screen reader, who can't "just keep scrolling" past). And I think a lot of it can be attributed to ignorance? I think most of the people tagging their fics like it's an ingredient label, listing every character, setting and trope that appears, however minutely, are usually newbies to the whole fandom thing. Ditto those uploading every single shortfic they write as "chapters" of a single fic and tagging every iteration of fandoms and characters - I think they're unaware of how much of an annoyance it is to have this massive, mostly irrelevant "description" appearing in whatever tag users have clicked on and of how readers actually use tags; they're just labelling, like a kid decorating their fic with stickers. It's not deliberately malicious, but it can still be damn irritating? Those are the garden variety Wall-o-Tag offenders, though: the full context of what actually forced AO3 to crack down is the site clogging trolling of STWW, a fic with several thousand tags (and its copycat trolls). It was such obvious abuse of a system that relies on the good faith tagging of authors (and one that affected millions of users at once) that it led to AO3 finally setting up this tag limit before it even introduced a long promised block function.

At the other end of the "bad tagging" spectrum would be under-tagging, which basically functions in a way that "underadvertises" a fic and is detrimental to authors who were hoping to reach a wider audience or worse: "underwarns" for triggering/unwanted content and leads people to click on fics that will upset them.

So what can be done to combat bad tagging/promote better tagging?

Well, ao3commentoftheday has published this little flowchart of questions that I think are a great guide! And I think the better you know your fandom, the easier it will be to judge what you want to be tagging and how. For example: I know to tag background pairings in other tags in GoT fics, because there is so much content that people get annoyed when they find their OTP relegated to the background if you've tagged them in the character tags. TQG in contrast: such a small fandom that people are happy for whatever scraps of a pairing they can get.

Listen to what people are complaining about on your shiptag on tumblr, or on your relevant discord server. Remember you can always add or delete tags - AO3 lets you do both with ease, so if you get complaints or suggestions, take them into consideration.

Any other thoughts, oh f-list?
nrgburst: (beth sadface)
Okay, TQG fans on the f-list, I have a question for you!

I've been talking to [personal profile] humiliatedrook and it seems like fandom has vastly different interpretations of something that I thought was pretty clear?

Watch me keep snowballing these so I only have to put up one post for like, the last five challenges. LOL

Challenge #9
In your own space, brag about yourself. Tell us what things you've done that you're proud of; the things that make you the wonderful person you are.

I feel like I do enough repetitive self promo on tumblr, but for people new to my DW circle (Hiiiii! Welcome!), this is the fandom stuff I'm probably best known for:

Moana, FFVII, HTTYD, Game of Thrones, Kimi no na wa, The Originals, Star Wars, MCU  )

Challenge #10
In your own space, write a love letter to Fandom in general, to a particular fandom, to a trope, a relationship, a character, creator, episode, or it could be your fandom friends. Share your love and squee as loud as you want to.

Okay, I always do a Trope That I Love for this challenge, and this year I am going with Rivals to Lovers.

First of all, this trope is obviously derived from Enemies to Lovers, but they have to actually be COMPETING AGAINST EACH OTHER IN SOMETHING to fit this trope specifically. And the thing that makes both of those tropes so utterly delicious is the simmering tension between the characters. Think Anne Shirley and Gilbert Blythe in Anne of Green Gables- she is GOING to take the top grade and that annoyingly smart *sshole is NOT going to take it from her or she might actually spontaneously combust.

Rivals to Lovers- The Queen's Gambit GIFs and meta under the cut )

Challenge #11
In your own space, create a fanwork.

I made a Beth Harmon & touch set on tumblr here, partly because I needed a GIF for challenge 10 meta up above. :DDD

nrgburst: (yes i canada)
I'm actually editing a history of Canadian citizenship right now for the Lost Canadians and surprise! There were lots of racist laws designed to disenfranchise our Indigenous people and Asian immigrants. The most annoying thing is that they still affect our laws today. Of course I'm still proud to be Canadian! I just think we need to make sure our laws reflect who we are as a society now, instead of say, a vehement racist like Mackenzie King. (Who is on our $50 bill. Which is red.) Which brings me to:

 First year doing this!

This is one of my favorite colors and I've made lots of past fanworks with a red theme or totem:

Red String of Fate GIFset (Taki/Mitsuha, KNNW/Your Name)

Red String of Fate/Red Comet in Bound (meta) (Arya/Gendry, GoT)

ETA: OMG HOW COULD I FORGET THIS INCREDIBLE FANART?! (Arya/Gendry, Asoiaf with the Red String of fate)

I'm going to make a KNNW Red themed set later- this prompt came up in the evening for me so I don't have time to cap and GIF now. DONE HERE

The song Red by Taylor Swift is literally the first thing that pops into my head when you mention the color. She refers to it in Daylight on Lover too, and that specific lyric is the epigraph for 結び in Bound. ("I once believed love would be burning red. But it's golden like daylight.") BUT of course I made a GIFset with the lyrics from Red:

Loving him was Red GIFset (Kol/Davina, The Originals)

And because I associate Red with Vadar specifically here is my Kolvina set with Anidala quote after Kol killed Davina. FUN TIMES WITH OTP PARALLELS GUYS

Speaking of Vadar, who views the world in red:

Deal with the Devil GIFset (Anakin to Vadar, Palpatine, Star Wars)

and here is a drabble rec: Favorite Color by [archiveofourown.org profile] Merfilly

Not sure if I'm doing this right, but I'll make the KNNW GIFset later if this is supposed to be limited to new works. Just wanted to dip my toe in, so to speak!

nrgburst: (handling hiccup's pencil)
I've reposted a meta a day from both my tumblr and LJ/DW for March Meta Matters 2020 this week. I made a new pseud to do this, but I still lost a subscriber. (Whoops. Sorry, whoever you are!)

Things I've observed:

Meta that I wrote on TV shows/franchise movies while they were in progress is still relevant when it comes to examining tropes/devices but seems dated in the after. Like the meta feels incomplete without references to what happened in later seasons/films etc. but since that was the info I had to go in with at the time, it still stands? I dunno.

The ability to just up and change your url on tumblr breaks links like crazy. Grrrr.

I'm hesitant to go into tags with negative meta because that just seems like trolling, even if I think it's good meta. (Like my Passengers meta.) Ao3 is set up so that people are going into fandom tags looking for fic on their faves, not me taking apart why I think something sucked. Or maybe I'm wrong and most people are in the tag trying to fix-it?

I am now behind on reading library books and writing again so I think I'll take a week off to do those, then get back to it. I don't have reams of meta to repost anyway, but I like that some of it has sparked discussion and comments in a new fandom space. Like usually I just write essays for Trope Bingo for myself to get a bingo. It's nice to hear feedback on it!
nrgburst: (Caroline perseveres!)
I'm trying to give myself some productive fannish goals so I don't go crazy while we are stuck at home until Mid April. So I'm going to try to repost/archive meta I've written for [community profile] marchmetamatterschallenge every day this month. It's a nice quiet thing to do next to my kids who I've got doing worksheets and silent reading in the AM before we go outside for park time/biking/jump rope. I made a new pseud to post them under, but will my subscribers will get a notification on these anyway? (I don't want them to- it would feel like spam to me if I was signed up for somebody's fic and they started posting meta instead, but I can't seem to find the answer under the AO3 FAQs.)

Also still rewriting my Batcat fic although the fandom seems really dead and I've had zero feedback on it beyond kudos. I have a couple Arya/Gendry fics on the backburner as well. Hopefully between these projects and regular small meet ups with some friends and their kids, we won't go totally stir crazy.

nrgburst: (justice is blind)
So I read another four Kate Daniels books (Magic Bleeds, Magic Mourns, Magic Slays, Magic Rises) by Ilona Andrews and This is How You Lose the Time War by Amal El-Mohtar and Max Gladstone over the past couple of weeks.

The latter is amazing. When I first glanced at it, I figured it would take me a day to finish- it's novella length; only 274 pages. But reading it was like drinking potent wine- I had to savour each letter and subsequent encounter, and every few pages just left me swirling inside with awe at the sheer poetry and inventiveness of every exchange. Imagine infinite worlds and timelines where Nature has won out in many and Technology entrenched in others and so their agents keep going back in time to try to sabotage the other side and tip the balance further their way. Red is the ultimate agent for Tech, Blue the top dog for Nature. And that bitter rivalry over the fate of threads of time turns into a dare, which twists into creative correspondence, which grows into love that seems doomed despite the deep seated longing and admiration. At one point Red carries three of Blue's letters behind her eyeball, aching to read them and yet terrified to do so and blow the whole thing for both women, and that double edged pain just hurt me so good. Lol
I want a real copy even though the Kindle copy is a fraction of the price. So I am going to wait until March for the paperback version to become available, since prices should fall. Anyway, here is a post canon oneshot that El-Mohtar actually recommended on goodreads! I didn't know authors could do that legally!

I'm still really enjoying the Kate Daniels series- the non-stop fantasy action and mystery of each book is well-written and always thrilling! But I wanted to write about Kate's romance with Curran because while I think it's emotionally compelling, and I understand why they love each other despite all the buts, the latest twist for the Relationship Drama really left a bad taste in my mouth and makes it harder to ignore all the Red Flag signs the authors have been trying to explain away, often in retrospect. Like, he's just super controlling because of His Tragic Backstory/Role as Pack Alpha. He constantly uses threats and physical violence against romantic rivals because he's a Shapeshifter and it's Just Their Culture. He also broke into her place several times to watch her sleep and steal her food because it's Their Culture. I'm guessing there have been reader complaints about him displaying Classic Domestic Abuser signs, hence Spoilers for Magic Slays and Magic Rises ) Dislike. Dishonour on your cow. Can this stop being a trope in romance already?

Anyway, I thought I was making good progress into my pile of library books but it just keeps growing faster than I can get through them. I've put some holds on pause now- I was so used to having to wait forever between holds coming in but now I have the opposite problem!

Next up: The Fifth Season by N.K. Jemisin and Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson. Also Gunmetal Magic by Ilona Andrews, because I think it was the story in between Magic Slays and Magic Rises due to the continuity gap.

Challenge #14

In your own space, share your love for a trope, cliché, kink, motif, or theme. (Or a few!) What makes it particularly appealing for you? What do you like in fanworks featuring that trope?

I always love this particular challenge!

I still remember bumping into this in Trope Bingo a few years ago and going huh, new word, what does that mean? And now it is one of my favorite things, although I wouldn't call it a trope? It's more like a narrative device: a story told through diary entries or letters, and so associated tropes are often long distance relationships and/or body swap.

Burn before reading )

nrgburst: Taki/Mitsuha (Red string of fate)
Challenge #9 In your own space, promote at least one canon that you adore (old, new, forever fandom).

THIS MOVIE. Even thinking of this film makes me feel so many things?! I thought it would be a cute bodyswap film with hilarious hijinks and a side of romance, and it is-- but only for about the first third of the film. Then it starts adding more layers: the importance of connections and what counts as a tie that binds, relationships changing, and a mystery, underscored with the sense of baffling loss and disquiet when you suddenly lose one POV. It all comes together when they figure out the Plot Twist, and you end up going between excited over their gutsy caper, joyful and triumphant to utterly bereft again and then like, twisting in agonies of hope. Put the story together with the amazing RADWIMPS headed soundtrack and beautiful animation (with such attention to detail!) and a symbolic connecting thread that you realize has been in front of you the whole time and it just crystallizes that it was a work of art masquerading as lighthearted fare. I swear all of Japan went absolutely mad over this film (it was all I heard about all summer) when it was released and deservedly so.

You think you know the story: traditional country girl (Mitsuha), modern city boy (Taki), and an inexplicable magical connection that means they end up regularly swapping bodies in their sleep. The plot of the movie will surely be to find out why the swapping is happening, but basically the important thing is not to screw up life too much for the unexpected partner. There's the expected underlying theme of learned empathy despite their differences- illustrated beautifully in how they use her notebook: her notes are organized, neat and thorough while he sketches and scrawls instead ("Who the hell are you? What even is this place!?") with no regards to the lines or class material. Mitsuha cultivates a friendship with his crush/coworker Ms. Okudera in Taki's body and happily indulges in cafes in the Big City against Taki's wishes, while his quick temper and ignorance of things like using a sports bra similarly cause Mitsuha endless consternation whenever she returns to her body. The bickering they do through their phone diary entries is sooo funny. (Remember you're wearing a skirt! Guys are talking! This is basic human behaviour!) (Stop wasting my money already!) (It's your body I'm feeding! Besides, I'm working your shifts too!) XDDDD And of course, they end up learning good traits from each other despite never actually meeting- their communication is all done through texts and diary entries. (Epistolary is one of my favorite shippy tropes.)

Aaaand then the film changes direction, but I won't spoil it. It's such a good twist though! You will be like, DUH HOW DID I NOT SEE THAT and yet OMGGGGG NOOOO.

It's not a totally perfect film- Taki frequently gropes Mitsuha's boobs while in her body and it's played for laughs instead of as a violation. And honestly, I could have done without that last (first?) barrier between them because it seemed like contrived last minute conflict. But it's such a work of art and it will make you feel all the things, so I can't recommend it enough.

Anyway, here are some of the fanworks I've made for this tiny fandom, and I would love, love, love to see more! (One of the links above is one of my GIFsets, the other is somebody else's)

PROPHECIES )
nrgburst: (YESSSSS)
One of the awesome things that the MCU allows for is the capacity to focus on the relationship between two seemingly mismatched Avengers outside of an Avengers film. In Captain America: The Winter Soldier, we were able to see Steve Rogers and Natasha Romanov grow, bond and understand each other despite initially having little in common. They’ve done this successfully again with two more dynamics in Thor: Ragnarok: that between both Thor&the Hulk and Thor&Bruce Banner. In fact, despite this being a Thor titled film, both the Hulk and Banner got far more character development than they’ve seen onscreen since the original Avengers- especially the Hulk.

“Oh, Banner. I never thought I’d say this, but I’m happy to see you.” )

I got to see it opening weekend here (yay!) and I’m a little disappointed there was no promotional postcard given out like I got for Pacific Rim and The Force Awakens. Come on! We got it a whole week later than the rest of the world- no goodies? :(

It was awesome anyway- I laughed, I cringed, I cried. I didn’t expect the latter- GotG doesn’t take itself that seriously so I didn’t expect to be moved to tears not once but twice. The emotional scenes were really well done too- I loved the character/relationship arcs and the continuing theme of found family. Plus the execution was great, with fun camera angles and pretty graphics and the way the music meshed. Baby Groot was especially adorable! Spoilers! )All in all, a great sequel that both built on and added depth to the story and characters from the first GotG. Anybody see it in 3D? I’m debating going into town next week to see it in 3D if it’s worth the additional cost. (Local theater doesn’t have a subbed version in 3D.)
