Also here is my completed AxGweek fic! This is a post-canon fix-it and I think it addresses Arya's Faceless arc a lot better than the show did? (Since the show just sorta dropped it. She was Arya Stark of Winterfell and going home, ha! But... turns out she didn't ACTUALLY give up being Faceless and stole a bunch of faces. And isn't it odd how emotionally stunted she seems after getting her vengeance on the Freys while being Faceless.) I combined 5 of the axgweek prompts into one fic and I think it worked pretty well. :D The other two days I did GIFsets plus a bonus art/edit so I did my best to represent, anyway! LOL

I'm actually editing a history of Canadian citizenship right now for the Lost Canadians and surprise! There were lots of racist laws designed to disenfranchise our Indigenous people and Asian immigrants. The most annoying thing is that they still affect our laws today. Of course I'm still proud to be Canadian! I just think we need to make sure our laws reflect who we are as a society now, instead of say, a vehement racist like Mackenzie King. (Who is on our $50 bill. Which is red.) Which brings me to:

The song Red by Taylor Swift is literally the first thing that pops into my head when you mention the color. She refers to it in Daylight on Lover too, and that specific lyric is the epigraph for 結び in Bound. ("I once believed love would be burning red. But it's golden like daylight.") BUT of course I made a GIFset with the lyrics from Red:

Challenge #9 In your own space, promote at least one canon that you adore (old, new, forever fandom).

THIS MOVIE. Even thinking of this film makes me feel so many things?! I thought it would be a cute bodyswap film with hilarious hijinks and a side of romance, and it is-- but only for about the first third of the film. Then it starts adding more layers: the importance of connections and what counts as a tie that binds, relationships changing, and a mystery, underscored with the sense of baffling loss and disquiet when you suddenly lose one POV. It all comes together when they figure out the Plot Twist, and you end up going between excited over their gutsy caper, joyful and triumphant to utterly bereft again and then like, twisting in agonies of hope. Put the story together with the amazing RADWIMPS headed soundtrack and beautiful animation (with such attention to detail!) and a symbolic connecting thread that you realize has been in front of you the whole time and it just crystallizes that it was a work of art masquerading as lighthearted fare. I swear all of Japan went absolutely mad over this film (it was all I heard about all summer) when it was released and deservedly so.

You think you know the story: traditional country girl (Mitsuha), modern city boy (Taki), and an inexplicable magical connection that means they end up regularly swapping bodies in their sleep. The plot of the movie will surely be to find out why the swapping is happening, but basically the important thing is not to screw up life too much for the unexpected partner. There's the expected underlying theme of learned empathy despite their differences- illustrated beautifully in how they use her notebook: her notes are organized, neat and thorough while he sketches and scrawls instead ("Who the hell are you? What even is this place!?") with no regards to the lines or class material. Mitsuha cultivates a friendship with his crush/coworker Ms. Okudera in Taki's body and happily indulges in cafes in the Big City against Taki's wishes, while his quick temper and ignorance of things like using a sports bra similarly cause Mitsuha endless consternation whenever she returns to her body. The bickering they do through their phone diary entries is sooo funny. (Remember you're wearing a skirt! Guys are talking! This is basic human behaviour!) (Stop wasting my money already!) (It's your body I'm feeding! Besides, I'm working your shifts too!) XDDDD And of course, they end up learning good traits from each other despite never actually meeting- their communication is all done through texts and diary entries. (Epistolary is one of my favorite shippy tropes.)

Aaaand then the film changes direction, but I won't spoil it. It's such a good twist though! You will be like, DUH HOW DID I NOT SEE THAT and yet OMGGGGG NOOOO.

It's not a totally perfect film- Taki frequently gropes Mitsuha's boobs while in her body and it's played for laughs instead of as a violation. And honestly, I could have done without that last (first?) barrier between them because it seemed like contrived last minute conflict. But it's such a work of art and it will make you feel all the things, so I can't recommend it enough.

A/N: Taking massive liberties with the timeline and worldbuilding for this canon AU crossover, though I've tried to stay true to character dynamics etc. The main difference is that Robert made Stannis his hand right off the bat and not Jon Arryn, so the Starks have stayed safely north and dangerous secrets have remained secret. Chronologically, most of them are the same age they are in S7/8 (and those who were supposed to die are therefore older than they were)- if you've watched KNNW you'll be aware of the time twist but you definitely don’t need to have watched the movie- just crossing over the basic plot.
Leaning more towards the show than the books for existing side characters and events, but I'll draw from both. My first crossover ever, so concrit welcome!

Back on a Moana kick recently. So I made this set and then I made another centering around the use of hongi in the film and belatedly remembered to check the tag first and oh. Somebody else had made it already (with almost the same choices of GIF size and frames- it was bizarre!) and their set already had more than 25000 notes. XDDD The digital release is tomorrow (it's already the 21st here, but I'm assuming most of you reading this are not on this side of the world, haha), and I'm very much looking forward to getting the mini movie with it! :DDD

Your Name (君の名は）

A gorgeous movie that hooks you with its lighthearted and hilarious beginning and gradually ends up heartrending and suspenseful. The bickering between the main characters for "acting OOC" during their inadvertent bodyswapping is just delightful. XDDD My favorite bit is when he's yelling at her for spending his money on cafe food and she's like, "well it's YOUR body I'm feeding and I'm doing your PT job to earn it, so." And then the confusion and loss when that nuisance other half suddenly disappears. The plot is like The Lakehouse, but layered with references, parallels and symbolism, and the attention to detail is astonishing. I loved seeing the red string everywhere. I loved how it really felt like Tokyo, down to the warning stickers on the train doors. I got so nostalgic watching it- I used to live in Tokyo and even hearing that abrupt slamming sound of a train rushing past another made me love it all the more. It does the flip side of country life just as accurately, with the sound of fusama shutting to the accent (Gifu is near where I live, and my kids actually have an accent like Mitsuha's, to their Tokyo relatives' constant amusement.).

Despite all the buzz, I think anybody saying this is the best animated film of the year is kidding themselves? Moana, Zootopia and Kubo and the Two Strings convey much more powerful, universal messages, especially when you consider that the target audience is a lot younger. Yes, it definitely could have gotten an Oscar nod, but I don't think it deserved to win over any of those. Still, it was a wonderful film, and I made some icons to celebrate it too! (Really, I just wanted the words バカ and あほ on my journal. LOL):

    

Race to the Edge is back too, but have only watched the first ep so far. It's not as compelling as the HTTYD movies so it's easy to give them to the kids one at a time. (Plus I've already been spoiled via tumblr, so I can just watch those GIFs with glee.) :D

Reveals will be happening for chocolate box soon! Can't wait to see what else my gift maker has written! I think somebody has recced my fic somewhere because I just got a bunch of comments on it in this morning, which just makes me so happy. :D I wrote something that wasn't a popular pairing/character and it's towards the back of the archive because I guess I submitted earlier than most folks, so the hits have been pretty low. I'm glad people who read it liked what I did, at any rate! :D
