nrgburst: beard mouthing Oh My God (beard omg)
So! I know it's been ages since I've done a reaction post but I wanted to share about the following things:

1. Neil Gaiman's Masterclass on Writing is FREE if you have Hoopla through your library! I've been watching the episodes and getting my notes together to maybe actually get the book written. One of the pieces of advice he gives: "You learn more from finishing a failure than you do from writing a success."

So I gotta get off my butt and just finish failing, I suppose. One cannot edit nothing, as I often tell my kiddo when they are bemoaning The Absolute Trash they have written and wanting to just scrap everything. Taking one's own advice is so annoying though; I'd much rather take his. :P

In the Masterclass he also mentions quotes (about fairytales and the reality of defeating dragons) and an anecdote that I recognized (the one about wasps and what constitutes bravery) and so

2. I went and re-read Coraline, which is the first proper book I have read in a while! I think it helped a lot that it was paper and you know, an easy read. Creepy in a good way and OMG I am actually Coraline's parents now even though I used to be her. LOL But it leads me to believe I should get back into reading books again via the ones on my shelf instead of ebooks, just because I think they'll be easier on the eyes.

3. I watched Wakanda Forever with my kiddo and we loved it! I know opinions out there are mixed. But I think they did a really solid job of it, considering they probably had to scrap whatever the original plan was before. And to me, that sense of "it wasn't supposed to be this way" bewildered grief made a lot of sense for Shuri's struggle throughout, and maybe it was meant to be cathartic for the audience too? I thought it was a great coming of age story, and I really liked the parallels (and shocking mirrors) in it. Yes, they could have done more development - I thought there would have been more Riri and Shuri screentime together, considering the way they act in the trailer? But all in all, I loved seeing so many women have their own journeys and literally one hopelessly outclassed Tolkien white guy again, hahahaha. The music is amazing too - Rihanna has two songs on the soundtrack and ugh, they are beautiful.

Anybody else watch it and have thoughts?

Thank you for whatever you make for me! I lean more towards wanting sweet, heartwarming or sexy treats, but if you have something that gives wonderfully angsty pangs based on the pairings below, go for it! Angst with a happy ending is my #1 favorite thing and I love it when it hurts so good. ๐Ÿฅฐ

Art: Anything shippy is going to be awesome and make me squee! Hugs, leaning on shoulders, brushing hair - anything where they are showing affection and/or attraction, please! Reinterpretations of scenes from canon are a fave too!

Some general DNWs:

Graphic gore, Scat/Watersports, A/B/O, Mpreg, Cheating on a partner, High School AUs, misogyny, major character death, non-con sex, character bashing or humiliation, incest (unless it's already established in canon), non-requested pairings, hurt without comfort, unrequested pairings, owner/slave, teacher/student or employer/employee dynamics. No oral sex where one partner is choking/gagging either, please.

Things I love:
canon-AU, 5+1 and missing scene type fics, worldbuilding details, female characters acting with agency and awareness, badass couples being badass together. I love action, angst with a happy ending, fluff and soulmate AUs, fairy tale/literary/mythology references/AUs, epistolary formats. More loves: humour, witty banter, pining, family bonding, everybody lives!, respecting boundaries, sexytimes, feminist themes, competency, respectful relationships.

Canon specific prompts:

Ted Lasso, TQG, GoT, MCU ) too!

So this was me! I actually matched on a different pairing but how could I not write Yelena&Natasha after seeing Black Widow?!

Vested Interest (2090 words) by NRGburst
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Black Widow (Movie 2021), Marvel Cinematic Universe
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warnings: Major Character Death
Relationships: Yelena Belova & Natasha Romanov
Characters: Natasha Romanov (Marvel), Yelena Belova
Additional Tags: Missing Scene, background Alexei/Melina, Post-Canon, angsty ending, Assuming all of Family 2 got dusted, hence the major character death
Summary:

Because sometimes a baby sister might need some help from the cool kids. (Or vice versa.)

I haven't had the mental/emotional space to do my usual rummage and rec from the fic collection, but I will try to remember to do a browse later!

I only finished one book in July and it was mostly for research for a fic I probably won't write now. ๐Ÿ˜… Still, it was interesting and informative and I'd recommend it for sure. All the historical details about menstrual products from the past make me very grateful for my cup, and not at all sure that any fic talking frankly about periods (and sex while on a period) would be well received at all. Like it still seems to be one of those taboo subjects, even though most fic authors tend to be people who menstruate. Isn't that weird?Cut for more period talk but I am also kind of annoyed that it isn't more normalized )

Flow: The Cultural Story of Menstruation by Elisse Stein and Susan Kim

Anyway, I was watching a lot of TV instead of reading, I suppose.

TED LASSO
IS BACK AND AHHHH. SO MUCH LOVE. It got off to a weird start but I think it's hit its stride again after getting all the character arcs set up. I really need to GIF it and make icons! One weird thing in the last ep:Cut for spoilers )
I also finished Loki last month and... it was okay? It didn't ever seem to really get great like Wandavision did, although I totally ship it and I'm thrilled they went there in the end. ๐Ÿ˜

Also been watching a lot of documentaries like the various Explained series on Netflix.

Movies: Loved watching A Quiet Place Part 2, Black Widow and Luca last month.

Dear creator,

Thank you for whatever you make for me! Just love all the characters below and I cannot wait to see what you come up with, whether it's fic or art! ๐Ÿ˜„

Things I love:

I didn't manage to finish a single book last month. Not a one. Just too scattered mentally, I think- I'd pick one up and then get distracted, probably mostly because the B2 discord has reeeeeaaally picked up and I'm spending all my time there instead. Whoops. It's fun though! It's like our little corner of fandom has really come together even though casual TQG watchers have all basically moved on.

I did watch some things too! The whole season of Godless, which I had not thought I would enjoy (a Western? Really?) but completely overturned my expectations! I loved how it was women expertly toting the guns as well, a sweet F/F romance was the only one that was endgame, and there was a disproven prophecy! :DDD

Also I've totally caught up on Wandavision and oooh the angst. I am right back in my Infinity War feels right now. :((( "I just feel you." vs "I can't feel you." Nooooooo *sobs forever* I really do like the creativity of the first eps too, and I'm loving seeing Darcy and Jimmy again, as well as loving Agatha as a villain. Last ep is probably going to kill me, though. :(((

Plus I watched To all the Boys I've Loved Before: Always and Forever and I think it was even better than the book! So well done! I have already re-watched the first movie and am planning to do the second tonight. I love Lara Jean's panic response meltdowns! LOL They are so epic! Planning a crossover TQG fic and oooh it's going to be fun!

It's the mooooost wonderful tiiiime of the year~

This is just my favourite exchange- you never know if you're getting a delicious little ficlet or a giant chocolate heart or ART. And I got fanart this year for the first time, I am all aglow! Beth/Benny, Red String of fate in cozy, snuggly turtlenecks! Just look at the movement in this! :DDDDD

dance me to the end of love - (Beth Harmon/Benny Watts, G, fanart)

My recips both like their fics, so I'm pretty stoked. I'd not written fic for either fandom before, although the tropes I used are faves.

Multifandom recs - here are some of the pieces I adored:

Fics:

Marshmallow Fluff - (Calvin&Hobbes, Calvin&Calvin's Mom, G, 907 words) HILARIOUS Spaceman Spiff intro that is just Perfection. Loved the ending of this too, Calvin's Dad totally deserves his "character building." LOL

A Thousand Shades and One - (Enola Holmes/Viscount Tewkesbury, G, 1590 words) 5+1, Language of flowers, post canon epistolary? SIGN ME UP. Her Enola voice is spot on perfect and the sweet, sweet flirting and Enola's protesting too much denials are adorable.

Starring Matt Damon - (Matt Damon&Loki, G, 480 words) OMG this was soooo funny I am cracking up all over again typing this out! You know how it was Matt Damon inexplicably playing Loki in Thor Ragnarok? The author runs with that concept all the way through to the end of the film- just the best kind of crackfic.

Beginners' Method - (Miles Morales&Peter Benjamin Parker, G, 681 words) A lovely little exploration of how Spiderman Noir is beginning to learn colors, and Miles helping him do so with his own hobby.

Fanart:

In Highgarden - (Sansa Stark/Margaery Tyrell, G, fanart) This is so beautifully done. The details like the lines of the fabric are exquisite.

Nights in the Waste - (The Castle&Turnip Head, G fanart) A lovely digital piece.

Capture the Castle - (Joe|Yusuf Al-Kaysani/Nicky|Nicolo di Genova, G, fanart) This piece is absolutely stunning, and is an amazing historical parallel to their kiss in the movie.

Stay with me a little bit longer - (Hades/Persephone, G, fanart) POMEGRANATE FLOWERS and such a sweetly loving pose.

nrgburst: (holdo/leia)

Better late than never! I did a mini version at the end of July (a couple of fic and gifset recs) but since I had multiple writing assignments due in the first couple weeks of august, I had to drop everything else to write. Now that I'm caught up, here's my MCU + VIOLET gifset!

Not really sure what to offer, but I can make icons or gifsets. Feel free to HMU with requests- any fandom that is tagged on my DW should be game. :) Going to list the sets I made for Sunshine challenge below if you want an idea of fandoms.

Kimi no na wa + RED

Star Wars + ORANGE

Train to Busan + YELLOW

Moana + GREEN

Game of Thrones + BLUE

Marvel Cinematic Universe + VIOLET

(I'm also going to Posted a FFVII + PINK set on my tumblr because I had planned to before realizing the other color prompt was indigo.)

This was a fun challenge! I liked taking a retrospective look at all the fannish things I've loved over the years. Looking forward to next year! :D

nrgburst: (joker applause)

I juuuust finished the GIFset for this prompt! :DDD Game of Thrones + BLUE (A Song of Ice and Fire) here on my tumblr
(alternate title was The Dragon has Three heads LOL).

Here are some icons I made while making the set. GIF icons are sized for DW only and won't work on LJ. Please credit if you gank'em!

Two songs come to mind immediately!

Blue by Sarah McLachlan (which is a cover of the song by Joni Mitchell, but I heard this first)

Also sticking with my Canadian theme, here's a live version of Beautiful Blue, one of my favourite songs by Holly McNarland

MCU: Since Nebula and Loki both have blue skin, here's a delightful GIFset parallelling them! angsty, blue and always ready to fight

And a Nebula GIFset with some of her most iconic lines. (Although I think the most !!! I was about her was in the first GoTG when she chose to CUT OFF HER OWN HAND rather than reach for help. LOL) #relateable

x (Didn't make these myself but original blog is deactivated so this is a link to my original reblog)

ETA: Why do I keep forgetting AtLA?!

Water is the element of change GIFset. This is the explanation Uncle Iroh gives in 2x19.

It's Puzzle Meme Time!

Below are 10 female characters from 8 fandoms. Fandoms listed in the tags, characters chosen have been discussed by/had fic written by me sometime, and are not repeats from meme 1 or meme 2. Try to guess who they are from the clues!

2. Ariel
3. Natasha Romanov
4. Arya Stark
5. Chihiro Ogino
6. Olenna Tyrell
7. Aerith Gainsborough
8. Sansa Stark
9. Beth Johanssen
10. Astrid Hofferson

2, 4, 7 and 10 have names that start with A.
3, 6 and 7 are dead.
3 and 9 have been to space.
3, 4 and 10 were trained to fight.

ETA: Bonus clue: #6 is a murderer.

ETA: YAY Totally cleared this year! :D Sorry Natasha was in so many clues but I kept finding connecting threads! Also yes, 3/10 characters from GoT may seem like overkill but like, if you have seen my fic for the past year you probably understand. LOL
nrgburst: (Maui YOU'RE WELCOME)
I was spoiled this year and I got TWO amazing Jojen/Bran (GoT) fics! I have re-read them both a bunch of times already and have been all asquee since I got them!

Absolutely love how cleverly crafted the first is. The way the author plays with multiple universes/time travel/greenseeing visions just gets me where I liiiive. With little Hodor pinches to remind you what isn't. Seriously can't wait to find out what else this author has written:

Twice and Future (969 words) by Anonymous
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Game of Thrones (TV)
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Jojen Reed/Bran Stark
Additional Tags: Timey-Wimey, Visions
Summary:

Bran dreams.

The second is a smutty little Jojenlives! snapshot of how Bran might be in an after where he's King and 3ER. And Bran is still so True North to Jojen and yet this also shows how Jojen can anchor Bran in reality too. Lovelovelove.

Hands of Time (550 words) by Anonymous
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Game of Thrones (TV)
Rating: Mature
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Jojen Reed/Bran Stark
Additional Tags: First Time, Fade to Black, Jojen Reed Lives
Summary:

Jojen looks half-surprised, half-flattered and half-apprehensive, never mind that that's one half too many. "You've seen this? Seen me?"

There are so many amazing things in the exchange this year! (Link goes to the fandoms page.) I was thrilled to find a couple longer pieces- Choco Box is great because the minimum word count is lower than most exchanges, so it's usually full of tiny, beautiful things. It's a delight to find several course meals in the mix, though! More recs:

Fic:

Lay on Hands (Spinning Silver, Irina/Mirnatius, 551 words, M) Love how this plays with the fire vs. ice themes of the book, and how these two literally embodied them.

Metal Rat (Rogue One, Baze/Chirrut, 947 words, G) Food as a love language and the last couple of lines are so swoonworthy them

Best Suited (Person of Interest, John Reese/Zoe Morgan, 756 words, T) So I totally shipped this in the first couple of seasons but fandom was totally not feeling it. But John in a suit, Harold acting jealous, Zoe telling John what to do; what's not to like?

build love, build god, build provinces (MCU, Natasha Romanoff/James "Bucky" Barnes, 2459 words, T) THE STRUCTURE OF THIS. THE TENSION. THE FEELS. So this fic is an ode to both Halsey's Manic and a negotiating-life-in-the-after kind of Winter Widow fic and I want to read it again just typing up this rec. LOL

Needlework (Game of Thrones, Tywin Lannister & Arya Stark, 875 words, G) I love "missing scene" fics and this dynamic was so great onscreen that it was pure pleasure to revisit it. The title is freaking brilliant too!

gonna thrill you in the way you deserve (Frozen, Anna/Kristoff, 2501 words, E) So this is wedding night, first time in actually ever smut, and the dialogue and characterization are just spot on. There was one euphemism I personally dislike, but in general it's sweet and awkward and oh wow sex is awesome kind of smut.

(At Least) Five Times Soren Told A Joke (And One Time He Didn't) (The Dragon Prince, Soren & Claudia, 2268 words, G) Want to wallow in angst over their current sibling relationship by reflecting on their past? GREAT. Reflects on how their family fell apart and how Soren (and Claudia) still cling to the jokes to cope.

Here Comes Trouble (Black Panther, T'Challa/Nakia, 10881 words, E) Long, plotty relationship backstory fic! Love this look at the War Dogs and just how freaking competent Nakia is and why T'challa just worships her. Also family feels and bonus smut!

Fanart:

Traditions (FFXII, Gabranth/Larsa Ferrinas Solidor, 533 words, G) This is both a short story and illustrations and very sweet!

Uncertainty (The Dragon Prince, Claudia & Soren) Claudia just needs a hug, okay?!  Set in S3 while waiting for Ezran's decision.

pure of heart (The Dragon Prince, Amaya/Janai) This is such a gorgeous painting. Ugh. LOVE.

I wrote two pieces, and both recipients liked them, so I am pretty happy! :)
nrgburst: (deke popcorn)
 Just a few!

Main collection is here.

The Dragon Prince: Find it, Fix it, Stitch it up- Claudia-centric fic! This one gets their family dynamic and the angst just right. LOVE.

Circe (Madeline Miller): In Confinement- Wonderful post-canon fic, and I loved how it explores Circe with one of her noxious siblings in the after.

Ocean's 8: When You Don't Have the Monet to Make the Van Gogh: Or A Rodin not Taken- Such a fun caper fic! Such an inspired title!

Captain Marvel: Fly me to the Moon- Carol/Maria in the after. I think this captures their dynamic perfectly.

Into the Spiderverse: One Last Leap- Miles-centric, his family discovers he’s Spider-Man. Found off somebody else’s rec-list AND IT’S SOOOO GOOD! Heartwarming and such spot on characterization and dialogue.

nrgburst: (natasha awkward)
I kind of can't believe that it's actually happening! Like, I am still so choked that they killed her off in Endgame but she finally got her own movie at least?

Also: I got a paid account again (waited for the annual sale) and yaaaaay! I missed my icons! :DDD

nrgburst: (Astrid writing)
Only read a couple books in February, but they were good ones!

Mary Roach is one of my favorite authors, and I got a paper copy of Bonk from the library after returning the ebook version, because I'm sorry, but ebooks just don't do footnotes justice, and the hilarious (and sometimes horrifying) related info in her footnotes is just THE BEST. There's something so delightful about her enthusiastic, unabashed curiosity ("Or maybe they're eavesdropping. I would be.") and appreciation of scientific method and her lighthearted and yet thorough exploration of the taboo ("And then, quite unintentionally, Dr. Schroder delivered the ultimate masturbation research sound bite. "Masturbation," she said, "is a touchy subject."). I love how much research and humor goes into her books, and I'm reading Gulp now.

Also read Claudia Gray's Leia: Princess of Alderaan, and really enjoyed it.

TBH, I went in hoping for more Holdo/Leia background and got Holdo&Leia and Leia/OMC instead. Also Amilyn Holdo seemed to be based on Luna Lovegood, and not much like her character from The Last Jedi besides the badass space smarts, which ??? Ah well. It was still beautifully written, with wonderful worldbuilding of the Empire era and how the Rebellion would have first started under its iron hold on the galaxy. It was like reading a masterful fanfic- there were great character details and cameos I didn't expect (Saw Guerrera, Captain Panaka!). The Bail&Leia (and Breha&Leia) scenes make you understand why Bail would "trust [Leia] with his life" with the Rebellion's secrets in Rogue One despite her youth and royal upbringing.
One thing that's always kind of bothered me are children who take up the ideology of their parents without question or consideration of the alternatives. (I think of Sunday School and youth pastors pressuring us to give ourselves to Jesus or be damned etc.) In this book, the Organas do the opposite, trying to protect her from the fact that they've joined the Rebellion, even though ideologically, she knows that everything they stand for is unlike the Empire. This coming of age book is all about how she makes that decision for herself. The final message of the book, when Bail realizes that he "cannot simple save her. That [she has] to stand by [their] side" in this fight" in order to get the future she wants to live in, is especially relevant in the wake of current events in Parkland, Florida.

I don't have any Fresh or Interesting thoughts about Black Panther besides that it was an incredible film, and I want to see it again. I'm obsessed with All The Stars and Pray for me off the soundtrack and Shuri (Sneakers!) and Okoye (WITHOUT QUESTION) are my new faves. ♥ Also Erik Killmonger is just the perfect villain, WOW. He stole all his scenes and talk about an amazing final line. SPOILERS )
I'll probably be making icons of Shuri and Okoye later today to add to this post. :D
nrgburst: (Default)
I'm baaack! Taking care of my sister sort of tanked most fannish things I'd planned to do in February (like writing and signing up for [community profile] space_swap *cries*) but at least I can still sign up for maythe4th. Also: I haven't ever shipped real people but OHMYGAWD I swear CBC (our national, government sponsored TV channel) helped put me on the Virtue/Moir (our Olympic Ice Dance Gold Medalists) train. Like they seriously made a freaking fanvid about them AND a Road to Olympics documentary and now I'm like everybody else, watching old videos like their TEDx talk and hoping they'll just get together already now that they are retiring. /totally judging myself XD

Also Moir totally skipped a "mandatory" practice to watch the Women's Hockey final and his reaction to yet another penalty decision is just A++++. Watch him not spill his beer while he shouts at refs in a Canada toque! XDD Patrick Chan's reaction (you can see him next to Moir in the GIF) is also priceless. XDDD

I got 2(!) gifts for Chocolate Box! First time ever to get a treat- I was so surprised!

My main gift is Amaaaazing! Such loving detail put into the characterization and format, and the callbacks will kick you in the feels in the good way. SO MUCH LOVE and you should all read it!

Fic: Bring it on home by [archiveofourown.org profile] interabang
Fandom: Guardians of the Galaxy
Characters/Pairing: Peter Quill/Gamora
Rating/Warnings: T, none
Word Count: 3517
Summary: Gamora reflects on her 'unspoken thing' with Peter, before and after he calls it that.

I also got a cute ficlet with a Stark sibling reunion.

Fic: The Pack survives by [archiveofourown.org profile] Chosenfire
Fandom: Game of Thrones
Characters/Pairing: Jon Snow&Sansa Stark&Arya Stark, background Jon Snow/Daenerys Targaryen
Rating/Warnings: G, none
Word Count: 472
Summary: Jon returns to Winterfell and gets the third degree from his sisters (and Ghost).

My fic was fairly well received! It's not a hot pairing or fandom but the comment+kudos/hit ration is good! I did some worldbuilding to try to explain how Padme got that antique wedding dress tailored in time for a secret wedding.

Fic: Pearls of Wisdom
Fandom: Star Wars: Prequel Trilogy
Characters/Pairing: Anakin Skywalker/Padme Amidala
Rating/Warnings: G, none

nrgburst: (YESSSSS)
One of the awesome things that the MCU allows for is the capacity to focus on the relationship between two seemingly mismatched Avengers outside of an Avengers film. In Captain America: The Winter Soldier, we were able to see Steve Rogers and Natasha Romanov grow, bond and understand each other despite initially having little in common. They’ve done this successfully again with two more dynamics in Thor: Ragnarok: that between both Thor&the Hulk and Thor&Bruce Banner. In fact, despite this being a Thor titled film, both the Hulk and Banner got far more character development than they’ve seen onscreen since the original Avengers- especially the Hulk.

โ€œOh, Banner. I never thought Iโ€™d say this, but Iโ€™m happy to see you.โ€ )
