(Reminder that 3x01 was titled, A House divided" and "For the Next Millenium" was the header.)
There are also interviews from Narducci about the finale this year which hint towards a time jump in the finale, likely a three year jump so that 1) TO is in sync with TVD again and 2) Hope is old enough to get a child actor who can actually remember lines and direction for S4, since her special powers are going to be displayed in the finale and explored in S4.
So here is my Kolvina Happy ending Spec/meta, assuming Kol is successful in bringing back Davina in 3x21. I assume this because he actually sounds like he's being useful in 3x22 in the synopses and losing Davina permanently in the previous ep would surely cause some crippling grief and spiralling.
I think Kol/Davina were intended to be a keystone ship from S1? His name actually stands for "darkness" and hers means "divine". Who better to pair with a wily, magic loving troublemaker than a too-serious rebellious witch? And here is a Plec interview where she explains that Kol was meant to be brought back by Davina at the end of S1.
Since S2, Kol has been on a redemption arc. It's immediately obvious that being put in a witch body changed him fundamentally: he doesn't kill anybody; he doesn't ever drink alcohol (and he's a Mikaelson!); he uses use his charm, "witchy encyclopedia brain" and magic to solve problems instead of resorting to violence and murder. But the biggest change is his newfound vulnerability-- "make Kol bleed" seems to be a running theme in S2 since he was placed in a weaker witch body. To protect himself, he fosters relationships with allies and offers the only thing he can to win their trust: his own. That willingness to let his guard down is rewarded with the flourishing of his relationship with Davina and a recovery of his strained relationships with Klaus and Rebekah.
Before he dies, he tells Rebekah about how much he preferred being a witch over being a vampire despite the weaker, mortal body:
Back in his vampire body (and Cursed) since 3x15, we've seen him rage, self loathe, vamp out and drink incessantly and miss doing magic) before doing the one thing he'd gone to desperate lengths not to: murdering Davina by draining her of blood. All in one fun-filled week!
So I'm pretty sure Kol's character arc this season is going to culminate in him taking The Cure and return to being truly himself.
1) We have a Mikaelson witch, Lucien's reverse engineered spell sheet and remnants of white oak available (both ash and Lucien's serum) to make the cure.
2) As a witch Kol can not only resurrect Davina, he will also no longer pose a constant threat to her again. It seems obvious from the synopses that Marcel's furious bid to "bring her back" in 3x20 is going to fail, not least because they are both vampires with no access to magic themselves. I also think Curing himself and choosing to be mortal will be the evidence that convinces Marcel that he really, truly loves Davina, since Marcel made the opposite choice with Rebekah.
3) Kol and Vincent are off to the Ancestral Plane in 3x21. He shouldn't be able to unless he's a witch. I think the detective's involvement is a red herring in the synopses.
4) It's ironic/poetic as hell because the search for the Cure is what got him staked on TVD in the first place.
5) Kol's been consistently paralleled/juxtaposed to Finn (constantly daggered, "dead but never mourned", odd man out with the Always and Forever crowd), and his wish was also to go back to being a witch.
As for Davina, I think her character arc is going to pay off in two ways this year:
She's wanted to bring down the witch power system since S1, when she was the reluctant sacrificial lamb. After being Shunned and now murdered via Cursed!Kol, she has even more incentive to burn it all down as she and Vincent have alluded to:
Although there have been no hints as to how they are going to even try this, I'm betting the next two eps are going to revolve around this plot.
The other character arc is the one that's always pointed to her getting the hell out of NOLA. She's fascinated by Kol's talk of travelling and studying magic abroad in S2, but losing him and becoming Regent seems to grind that dream to a halt.
2x19: Davina: "If Kol had asked me to run before he got hexed? Well, he wouldn't have had to ask me twice."
Davina (to Josh): "You know I'd go anywhere to see you. ... It would be too depressing if one of us didn't get a happy ending."
3x07: Marcel: "Please, D. Let me help you get out of town."
3x19: Davina (to Kol): "You just leave! No goodbye, no nothing! I tried to use magic to track you, then I realized you were somewhere magic couldn't reach. ...Just promise you'll never leave me again."
I think he's going to make good on that promise even though he didn't agree to it then. And I think the time jump gap will be a perfect chance for our two lovebirds to do some witchy wandering around the planet before whatever happens in S4 draws them all back to NOLA again. Plus Hope and Freya could drop in via magic for lessons/catching up the way Freya did with Rebekah in 3x06.
