Netflix HOW SO AWESOME
Jul. 5th, 2015 08:21 amI am a worm, a worthless worm for not getting my fandomaid fics finished yet BUT SUCH AMAZING TV ON NETFLIX that I just have to come here and ahhhhhhh for a minute okayyyyy?
SENSE8 GUYS. SO MUCH LOVE. Kala is my fave, but I love all the characters and how this show is set in THE WORLD and not like, white people land. A+ themes too: empathy, identity, cultural/societal pressures, connection, evolution, processing grief/trauma. HOW LONG UNTIL SEASON 2 ALREADY
And Dragons: Race to the Edge is not super compelling for me. but I'm LOVING how it is not The Hiccup Show and more of an ensemble. Still haven't finished the series because my kids have been asking for MLP and Jurassic World (Ha!) over dragons but I'm not feeling anything fic worthy churning so I'm cool with the slower pace vs a binge. (Which is great, because I'm still going on my actual assignments. Like I go into negative word count some days because I keep deleting stuff but Guilty is taking better shape at last. As in it actually HAS a shape, YAY.)
Anyway- birthdays/whirl of sayonaras are finally over for the next six months or so, so back to writing full(er) time again. :D

Date: 2015-07-05 03:42 am (UTC)At no point does the show feel like a lecture/PSA, but at the same time, those things you mentioned are front and centre.
Mostly though, I just found it to be heaps of fun!!
As for fandomaid fics, I still owe some too (including one to you). I've only completed one so far, so no need to stress!!

Date: 2015-07-06 05:21 am (UTC)Yes! Makes total sense! Because all those things are facets of who people are, and not what define us, and so all the characters feel very three dimensional instead of archetypes or case studies. Like I ADORE how they handle Kala's religious beliefs. They are a core part of her, as much as her close relationship with her family, her job as a pharmacist, her worries about her upcoming marriage and developing feelings for this German guy who keeps showing up in her head. And they show instead of tell: she goes to the temple and prays regularly. She is part of a community that comes with her religion. I think most shows sort of dance around religion and try not to look too closely at it in fear of backlash? And it feels flimsy and false- like Kepner's out-of-nowhere devout Christianity in Grey's. Why don't we ever see her take Sunday mornings off, or pray before meals? If this was such a big part of her (like it is for members of my family), her best friend should absolutely know about it before an oh-so-dramatic hookup, you know?
Also: have you seen Jupiter Ascending? I just watched it last night and was :DDDD when I noticed Sun (Bae Doona) and Riley (Tuppence Middleton) in it. I guess the Wachowskis have favorite supporting actors. :D (They have great taste: James D'Arcy and Maria Doyle Kennedy too!)
I just feel bad about taking so long on the fics! I thought for sure I'd have them out by the end of June since I've gotten faster at writing/editing.

Date: 2015-07-05 05:15 am (UTC)Sense8 is one of the series that I really want to watch. A lot because I really like Freema Agyeman, but it just looks really neat.
Race to the Edge is a lot more fun than I expected. I'm surprisingly really enjoying the twins and Snotlout a lot... mostly because they are just so ridiculous I 'm kind of sitting there thinking to myself, "Why am I laughing at this? This shouldn't be this funny... why am I laughing so much??" There's a few things that kind of made me scratch my head and think, "Okay, I'll let that one slide." When Dreamworks had promo material that said "A mysterious Viking arrives on Berk! What does this mean for Hiccup and Toothless?" all I could think was, "Isn't that how about 75% of bad fanfiction starts??"
