A Commander is privy to classified intel; a Captain is not. Just to clarify for those with no military background, THAT'S WHY SHE WOULDN"T TELL HIM. HE DIDN'T HAVE THE CLEARANCE AND WAS NOT ENTITLED TO KNOW.

Whatever. It's the trope talking too, I think, and people just EXPECTED the story to play out with the funny, flashy upstart being better than his superiors despite evidence to the contrary.
I've seen so many people just BENDING OVER BACKWARD to make this Holdo's fault and FFS PEOPLE HE KILLED HUNDREDS OF PEOPLE. IT WASN'T HER FUCKING ERROR IN JUDGEMENT. DISOBEYING ORDERS IS NOT DEFAULT CORRECT. UGGGHHHGHHHHGGH
Bookmarking this for later, but you know what I'm realizing? We're so used to the Plucky Underdog Schools Superior Officer On How To Do The Thing that we expect that to be the default correct way TO do the thing. Like, there's a reason she outranks him. She EARNED her position and is good at her job. That's how the chain of command is supposed to work.
YES, that was the trope that they subverted so beautifully! And yet some people still missed the point because it was what they had expected; because he's funny and One Hell of a Pilot and it's what Tom Cruise and every other Action Boy does to Save the Day so it must be HER fault; she SHOULD have shared like Good Girls do! *grinds teeth*
She's just fabulous and amazing and I need to watch it again with my expectation blinders OFF because honestly? It took me a bit to figure out where they were going with this movie. Once I did, I loved it, but yeah, not having that expectation of, "But...action guy! Plucky underdog hero! We love Poe! Don't we love Poe? What's happening?!?" that I went into it with.
