THOR RAGNAROK

So I went to see it opening weekend and IT WAS AMAZING. Clever, funny, and ahhhh I am never not going to love prophecy tropes. It actually made AOU a little less disappointing in retrospect- the references to the visions Thor saw ("You are leading us to Hel. You are a destroyer, Odinson.") and Natasha's Hulk lullaby were A+. I'm going to see it again Tuesday, I think, but in the meantime have a list of my favourite bits:
VALKYRIE. You never once hear her real name in the film, which I think is kind of odd, but she was so freaking awesome. I loved her epic eyerolls, her friendship with the Hulk and unapologetic stance. Her impatient, "In a minute!" has to be one of the best lines ever. She's got a couple of spaceships to knock out of the sky using her bare hands, then she'll get in the ship. Plus Thor being like, Oh shit, I should be helping her with that. LOL BEST I LOVE IT.
She's the complete antithesis of Jane Foster, which makes me really glad? I can understand exactly why Natalie Portman pulled out of the franchise- Jane was being damseled the exact same way Padme was in the SW prequels (forever bitter that they literally cut her seeds of the rebellion arc out of Revenge of the Sith) and that almost destroyed her career the first time. Pretty sure she's going to end up Thor's love interest, which is going to be superhot! I love the way he was fanboying over her and her sword, even. And the way he won her respect was just :DDDD, especially because it was punctuated by him being still kinda idiotic (bouncing that ball into his own head during his inspiring speech!) but jumping right back up after. Anyway, there's rumor that Tessa Thompson was spotted on the set of Infinity War so we might be getting even more Valkyrie in a few short months!
Also the relationship arc between Thor and Loki across the Thor/Avenger films had such an awesome conclusion (for now, anyway)! Compare: Loki's grin at God mode Thor bringing down "the biggest lightning bolt in the history of lightning" to The Avengers when he was "not overly fond of what follows" lightning and the bitter way they looked at each other. Also Thor's grin at Loki's entrance in the same pose as that ridiculous statue. :DDDD Their brotherly bickering and personal growth and them finally being at peace with each other is just <3. I read some great meta on how Hela's introduction made Loki see that he didn't have to be Thor's evil opposite to feel he had succeeded at something; that he wasn't innately flawed because he was a Frost Giant when Hela was 100% Asgardian and "Just The Worst". I went back and watched the original Thor, and I noticed there was actually a cut to Frigga giving Odin an odd look after Odin proclaims Thor his first born. I'm sure back then it was a little clue that the Loki was not Odin's biological son, but it's a great prop to continuity, too.
I really hope Hela isn't dead, since she's the best MCU villain since Loki, LBR. If "Asgard is not a place, it's a people" and her power comes from the same source as Thor's, destroying the realm wouldn't destroy her power either? Can a Goddess of Death actually die? Isn't Thanos supposed to be her #1 fan?
And if the destruction of the Bifrost in the original film caused chaos across the 9 realms that took until Thor: TDW to clean up, wouldn't Odin's death and the actual destruction of Asgard be worse?
Whatever. I like this whole Exodus/Thor as Moses idea too, but not sure if Asgard is now already toast because of that after credits scene.
What did you all think? Anybody have any good meta to link to?

Date: 2017-11-18 05:29 pm (UTC)Agreed! I want her to have some sort of role in Infinity Wars, even if it's just as the lady love who has Thanos presenting her with all the people he's killed as a courting gift, and her looking unimpressed and shoving his kneeling, groveling self with her high-heeled boot. I would pay double the money to see a scene like that.
I LOVE LOKI AND VALKYRIE SO MUCH IN THIS MOVIE. You should read this meta by
Also this essay that she recced: http://endlessyarning.com/2017/11/12/thor-ragnarok-indigenous-film/. And then this fan theory, https://rhoda-rants.dreamwidth.org/251060.html. And my review and general squee is here, https://lynnenne.dreamwidth.org/317164.html.
SO MUCH FUN.

Date: 2017-11-19 03:20 am (UTC)And Hela just HAS to survive! Pleasing Lady Death is supposed to be Thanos' main motivation in the comics, so there's a totally plausible comic book storyline reason for her to be there!
It was such a fun movie! Definitely one of my favorites in the MCU. It might even beat out GotG- the non-male gaze thing was such a relief that I didn't click onto until I read that review!
