Fandom 2021 review

nrgburstObviously my main fandom this year was The Queen's Gambit! ♟️I posted 10 fics and 1 meta on AO3 this year, and 6 fics (and the meta) were TQG. 32 out of 40 edits/GIFsets posted to my tumblr: also TQG. Ted Lasso and MCU squeaked in there too, and the TL stuff shows up in the top 5 of my tumblr year in review post because Big Active Fandom but it's pretty obvious where my fannish heart lived in 2021, I think! 😅

So I posted about half the words from the previous year, but TBH I think my stats in 2020 were inflated because I was unemployed and had so much more time on my hands to make stuff. 😅

My favourite fanworks this year: Er. I love them all but the one that I put the most heart/time into was probably Exchange.
My best fanwork this year: the touch placebo is structurally and thematically gorgeous, IMO? Also I think the POV work is great and I like the way it ends with a sucker punch, hahaha!
My most popular fanwork this year: Exchange and Beth in white/Benny in black 2.0
Most fun fanwork to make/write: This GIF battle with flemoncake/go-catch-a-chickn about The Superior Benny Hair scene. Also I was cackling out loud writing In which a new bargain is struck (and a dream comes true)
Most sexy fanwork: Skittles was my first foray into E rating territory! No regrets.
Fanwork that's most under-appreciated by the universe, imo: Coda, definitely! It's Alma-centric and about her living her best life in her last days in Mexico.
Biggest surprise: Playing the Rush. I thought I was done writing B2. I was wrong. LOL
Hardest to write: Vested Interest though not because of the subject matter; because of the fandom drama in the background.
Most unintentionally telling fanwork: Gloves Off is based on RL experience. LOL
Fanwork with single sweetest moment: Joy and Harmonny - every ending scene qualifies, but I think the first one for Huddle for Warmth is the sweetest.
Most overdue fanwork... Playing the Rush. (Or rather its followup, maybe.😅)
Story that shifted your own perceptions of the characters: Truth, because I had to re-watch WandaVision again from Monica's perspective specifically just to write it.
Favourite premise: Playing the Rush! What if Benny had gambled his way to Moscow?
Favourite opening/closing lines, and favourite line from anywhere: Sam might call it paranoia, but all widows who survive the Red Room develop certain skills.
She should have known Benny would prove her wrong again.
"Come to bed, Howl. I'd rather dream with you than of you."
Favourite title: Coda. Double meaning titles are my fave!
Favourite tags, summary and author's notes: Lord this meme is thorough. #Goodness! because fandom challenge hehehe
Howl glances up at the sky, and Sophie can practically see a plan brewing in that crafty skull of his before he smiles. “Indeed it does,” he says brightly. “What do you say about striking a new bargain?”
Really, it's like some people and/or fire demons don't have a lick of common sense between them.

This year's themes, and the fanworks that demonstrate it most: Making it work in an established relationship. I know the will-they-or-won't-they conflict is much more common as a fandom fic theme, but I wrote a lot of B2 being a couple/team and sometimes fighting and being vulnerable. Exchange, Skittles and Joy and Harmonny are all under that umbrella.

Did you take any writing/fanwork-making risks this year? Already talked about the foray into E writing earlier, so GIFwise: Yes, and I learned a lot! B2 in B&W 2.0 was the first time I tried cutting a GIF up and now I can do this really easily - it took me three days to make this the first time though!
Checkmates/Roommates/Soulmates- First time to try GIFs in text.
How many things did you beta for other people? Three! ETA: I just made a collection for this, oops.
Goals for next year? Finish the second half of PTR, TQG alphabet set once tumblr figures itself out.
