Challenge #9
In your own space, brag about yourself. Tell us what things you've done that you're proud of; the things that make you the wonderful person you are.
I feel like I do enough repetitive self promo on tumblr, but for people new to my DW circle (Hiiiii! Welcome!), this is the fandom stuff I'm probably best known for:
Moana
This takes top fandom for two reasons:
This GIFset/meta post on tumblr about the Hero's journey and Pep talks , which has over 30000 notes, which is crazy. It was just a bit of meta for trope bingo but it blew up so much that I had to turn off notifications for tumblr because it was killing my phone.
Smitten, which is my most kudos-ed/favorited fic, and also the one with the most reviews/comments. In combo with the crosspost on ffnet, there are over 80 comment threads for this one 3000 word piece, which is bonkers- this little one-shot even beats the stats off most of my multichap fics except for a few notable exceptions. M, Moana/Maui, no archive warnings- post-canon so she's older.
I made some Moana GIF icons if you'd like some for your DW- feel free to gank. :D I put up icon posts every once in awhile, but I usually do most of my GIFfing as sets on tumblr.
How to Train Your Dragon
So I was a hardcore Hiccup/Astrid shipper for a couple of years and Learning to Fly is still the multichap fic that keeps Hiccup as my avatar on AO3, because it still garners the most hits out of everything I've written. (M, 25000 words, no warnings)
Final Fantasy VII
Full Circle is still the longest/most total comments/reviews fic I've written, and I did it ages ago, but I still write multi-chaps in much the same way: like serial television, so that each chapter usually has its own distinct style/problem to solve, while also carrying character throughlines for the fic as a whole. (Link goes to ffnet.) This one was plotted as 12 months of a year + an epilogue. Yes, I am apparently always this deliberate a writer, gardener what? (T, 57000 words, no warnings)
Game of Thrones/Kimi no na wa
Bound was my first crossover fic and it has the unexpected honor of being the fic with highest comment count on my AO3. (I actually had no idea until I clicked the button on my AO3 now.) I'm still really proud of this one- I took a weird idea (bodyswap and time travel and prophecy) and I made it work, and it came out rather beautiful. (M, 34000 words, Arya/Gendry, no archive warnings)
I've been in the Gendrya section of the Game of Thrones fandom for awhile now, so 12/74 works on my AO3 are GoT, and half of those are Arya/Gendry. Most of my fandom peeps are still "Gendrya fam" members- pretty neat to see a username you recognize comment on a fic in a new fandom!
I have to talk about Kimi no na wa too, because it literally hits so close to home here, in Japan. My kids speak with a very similar accent to one of the characters because we are not far from her fictional home town. And I used to do the same commute as the other main character, on the same train line across Tokyo- like it was weird how many personal parallels there were, so this movie (which also has one of my favorite tropes- SOULMATES) is one that is really close to my heart.
So maybe that is why this fic (Deep Tie Knot, M, 1251 words, no warnings) is apparently my most bookmarked thing on AO3- I think that personal connection really comes through.
The Originals
I've written some Kol/Davina oneshots for this fandom, and I have a few GIFsets get a decent number of tumblr notes.
I guess that's what I'm known for in a nutshell? I have been kicking around fandom spaces awhile, so I've also made works for mega fandoms like MCU and Star Wars but I'm pimping these little Gen fics for Genuary to finish:

Challenge #10
In your own space, write a love letter to Fandom in general, to a particular fandom, to a trope, a relationship, a character, creator, episode, or it could be your fandom friends. Share your love and squee as loud as you want to.
Okay, I always do a Trope That I Love for this challenge, and this year I am going with Rivals to Lovers.
First of all, this trope is obviously derived from Enemies to Lovers, but they have to actually be COMPETING AGAINST EACH OTHER IN SOMETHING to fit this trope specifically. And the thing that makes both of those tropes so utterly delicious is the simmering tension between the characters. Think Anne Shirley and Gilbert Blythe in Anne of Green Gables- she is GOING to take the top grade and that annoyingly smart *sshole is NOT going to take it from her or she might actually spontaneously combust.
#petty
Just look at them! She calls him BenNy WaTts because he's so insufferably cocky and condescending. And they BOTH WANT TO WIN and are almost equally skilled, which makes every faceoff a bitter contest. Competitiveness, competence and just how much Losing to This Person In Particular Bothers Them is a big part of this trope- remember: the opposite of love isn't hate; it's indifference. And the fact that they already arouse so much emotion in the other is really telling, even if they don't see how similar they are at first.
Yeah just look at who is on the cover- she reads his book here too.
The Queen's Gambit does this trope particularly well because it has Beth and Benny play each other multiple times both at regular chess and speed chess so they can humiliate each other repeatedly.
x
And if you aren't cackling with delight when Beth finally wipes that goddamn smirk off Benny's face, you are probably not human IT IS DELIGHTFUL. LOL
x
Obvious parallels between the characters help strengthen this trope too- for example, Benny says "I know I’m right and Beth sees things the same way I do." They think the same way; often have similarities in their backstories (Beth and Benny were both child chess prodigies) and recognize what an excellent player the other is. So you can't help but wonder if they wouldn't be just as finely matched off the field as they are on it.
x
Plus, as mentioned earlier, THE TENSION makes the relationship inherently sexy. In a good Rivals to Lovers, the rivalry builds and builds, so that you are eagerly waiting for it to finally snap- and it's all the more delightful when the characters realize things like, huh, maybe sex would be a better way to relieve all these feelings I have for this person.
x
I think part of what makes it such a juicy trope is the built in conflict means that there is an inherent journey for both characters before they can accept that maaaaybe they make better romantic partners (and/or a team!) than rivals. And as a GIFmaker, I love seeing that progressive change in how characters look at each other over time as rivalry changes to friendship and then attraction. The Queen's Gambit takes it a meta step further too, and consistently dresses Benny in black and Beth in white too-- like the two sides of a chess set, fated to be opposed-- before they realize that maybe they function better as a matched set in the end.
Anyway, my absolute favorite rivals to lovers fic is this one- yes, it is a HP AU and has Arya and Gendry absolutely DESPISING each other because they both wanted to be captain of the Quidditch team. <3 SO GOOD.

Series: Part 1 of hogwarts au
Summary: There are few people Arya Stark dislikes more than Gendry Waters. One of those people might be whoever gave an arrogant, miserable dick like Waters the Gryffindor quidditch captain's badge.
Gendry just wants to win a championship, prove a few people wrong, and find a way to put up with his entitled, spoiled seeker.
Featuring: lots of quidditch, lots of bickering, not enough actual studying, an intrusive Ned Dayne, a clueless Podrick Payne, some mistletoe, some miscommunication, and a few hundred other clichés.
This Beth/Benny Spy AU is also a great example, but it is still a WIP!

They are total opposites, and they have always detested each other - until one day they are assigned their biggest mission yet; an undercover op to infiltrate an invitational weapons summit.
The only catch? Their cover is a deeply-in-love newlywed couple...
(Or, a Benny/Beth Spies AU.)
Feel free to rec more fics (or more canon examples of this trope) in the comments! I know people tend to tag it as enemies to lovers even if it's the more specific rivals to lovers, so it's a little bit hard to find. And finding more cake is always great! :DDD
Challenge #11
In your own space, create a fanwork.
I made a Beth Harmon & touch set on tumblr here, partly because I needed a GIF for challenge 10 meta up above. :DDD
