I actually just looked at the numbers a few days ago, so this is good timing! (I'm nearing the end of my latest notebook, where I plot out fic arcs, bingos and GIFsets, so I wanted a summary.) Plus OTW is currently doing another drive for funds- I spend a lot of time on AO3, so I was happy to donate. One thing: I wish AO3 did stats by chapter, like ffnet does!

Total: 31 works, 203489 words posted since 2013. In general: I write an average of 3439 words per piece/chapter (although they range from 100 to 8500 words), and I tend to complete one thing every three weeks or so.

Numbers blahblahblah )

Day 03

In your own space, set some goals for the coming year. They can be fannish or not, public or private.

Goals for 2017 )Goals for 2017 )Goals for 2017 )Goals for 2017 )

From [personal profile] karanguni

Let's start 2017 off in a positive way with a Pay It Forward meme. The first 6 people to comment (and more if I can manage it) will receive a surprise from me at some point in 2017 - anything from a book, a ticket, something home-grown or made, a postcard, absolutely any surprise! It will happen when the mood comes over me and I find something that I believe would suit you and make you happy.

(If you don't like surprises and would rather have something off a wishlist and/or some warning, let me know in your comment. The goal is to make you happy.)

If you can, post this in your own journal and pay it forward. Let's do more kind and loving things for each other in 2017, without any reason other than to make each other smile and show that we think of each other.

Er, that means you might have to give me your real address. So I'm going to screen comments here and on the LJ, just in case. Let me know if you have allergies if you would like a real surprise or if you would prefer a digital surprise!

Day 2

In your own space, share a book/song/movie/tv show/fanwork/etc that changed your life. Something that impacted on your consciousness in a way that left its mark on your soul.

My first couple of fandoms changed the way I interacted with media- instead of just consuming, I analyzed minutely; I created something back. The AN at the end of my first fic makes me smile a little now with its bewildered: am I even allowed to write a story about somebody else's story? Is this plagiarism? Or blasphemy? I just REALLY NEEDED TO WRITE THIS OKAY DON'T SUE ME.  And all because the ending of The Bartimaeus trilogy pissed me off to no end. (I might have a slightly more mature response now. Not sure. LOL I still write fic in response to NOPE INCORRECT feelings but half the time it's because fandom is being gross instead of me expecting the most happily-ever-after ending.)

My second fandom (FFVII) was the first really interactive one- I helped oversee fic awards, logged in daily to a chat to debate meta, and wrote over 60000 words of fic. I still occasionally see two friends from that time on LJ and tumblr now, but for the most part that circle has totally dispersed.

I also have to mention TVD- this is the first fandom I was in where canon was still being made. Interview spoilers! Stalking actors on social media to figure out if they were filming! Trying to guess character arcs from episode synopses! Getting attacked on my blog after expressing anti-ship opinions nowhere near the ship space/tags! FUN TIMES. XD I don't watch or HAVE INTENSE FANNISH FEELINGS AND/OR CAPSLOCK OPINIONS anymore, but I still like to see TVD GIFsets scroll by on my dash and fandom friends squee over the way narrative arcs have played out. (I don't think that we ever truly leave fandoms, I think they just hold our interest to a lesser degree.)

One of the sad things about fandom is that sometimes these people you have fantastic chats with will just up and disappear. I kind of wonder what they are doing now. Did fandom-famous author ever get published after flouncing? Did very young writer ever go to Uni? Are any of them dead and I just don't know it? So I guess I want to say: thank you for being in my life, for engaging with me over this great piece of media. It was a fun ride. (Also your ship is still not canon, okay.)

Hmm, I think I might have lost the plot a bit. LOL Um, here, have a list of other media that has had a formative impact on me even if I'm not particularly fannish over them:

Matilda by Roald Dahl

Star Wars (the original trilogy)

The Little Mermaid (1989)

Dragonflight and Damia by Anne McCaffrey

Star Trek: The Next Generation

Super Mario Bros.

Grey's Anatomy

Eat, Pray, Love by Elizabeth Gilbert

Every Andrew Lloyd Webber musical ever

The Joy Luck Club (1993)

Day 1

In your own space, post a rec for at least three fanworks that you have created. It can be your favorite fanworks that you've created, or fanworks you feel no one ever saw, or fanworks you say would define you as a creator.

I have 77 GIFsets and 7 fics to choose from in 2016, but I'll focus on 3:

The Martian: Newton's First Law

I'm really proud of this three parter fic because it has a great structure and heart. Also, the theme and conflicts are as science-y and detail oriented as the canon. Plus the love declaration in the second bit is pretty moving. ("This is what falling in love looks like.") I also tried writing in epistolary style for the third chapter and I LOVED IT. 10/10 would do again. Newton's First Law also does what canon (and fandom) doesn't: it focuses on the rest of the Ares 3 crew and the ground crew (although Watney is very much in character thoughts), it fills in that "7 MONTHS LATER" gap, and it challenges fanon theory about keeping Beck/Johanssen secret. I know Watney is everybody's fave, but I think even Weir understated how heroic the crew really were to come back for him.

More on Newton's First Law )

The Originals: Dear Destiny, F*ck You

I'm proud of this GIF set because of the way the poem and the scenes match up so perfectly. (Also look at that crisp resolution and how I flipped and then merged two GIFs in the 6th!) I think even the text placement makes symbolic sense.

Moana: Smitten

I was leery of writing this at first because I was really worried about disrespecting the tone and theme of the film. It's SUCH a fantastic movie, with themes about self concept and determination, the importance of family/culture and relationship arcs between family and friends. The heroine is fourteen, she doesn't need a love interest

But just as Moana itself solves a historical puzzle (Why did Polynesian explorers stop for 1000 years and then start again?) by mashing up Polynesian myth with an incredible OC, Maui's death myth seemed to be begging for a Disney-fied solve. One does not simply walk into Death's obsidian-toothed vagina without consent. (Also why the hell would he have expected to come out of her mouth? Wrong hole, dude.) Plus I love flipping prophecy on its head and canon fix-its.

See it's actually a bad thing that I have three WIPs. (And all three of them for trope bingo. DOUBLE CRAP.) I feel too scattered to finish them, especially when I'm all !!! over HTGAWM. Like you know when you have a story itching at the inside of your skull demanding to take form? That insistent compulsion: I NEED IT.

Three thousand more words or so due in 13 days. But the BotFA EE being released on the 20th should shove me back into the Hobbit frame of mind for a bit. I hope.

Meme from [livejournal.com profile] tielan: go to the 7th page of your current WIP, and copy/paste 7 lines starting from the 7th on the page:

From Discretion.

It felt oddly stilted after months of friendlier banter, and when the conversation lulled, Reeve studied the pensive way Rufus was seated before deciding to venture into less tepid waters.

“How did you know? I did my utmost to keep things professional,” he stated quietly.

Rufus smiled crookedly. “Simple observation. The way you began to limit the time allotted to our meetings and create deliberate distance after months of warmer interactions. Dilating pupils, a slight flush. It was…most compelling.” He paused.

I've decided to scrap the original intro and drop them into something less exposition-y, but hopefully I'll have the first chap done soon. This is looking like another 20000 words and I really need to focus on Allies and Alloys for [livejournal.com profile] springrain, so I'll leave it as a single chap unless it gets a huge response (which is unlikely, given both the pairing and a fandom in hibernation). It feels good to be writing again though, BLESS PRESCHOOL. Summer was so much fun, but it is so nice to be well-rested and unsociable and just make stuff again. I'm going for a double line bingo this time around, and since Reeve/Rufus only has a total of 10 fics on AO3, I think it'll count just fine for my Rare Pair fill. Also have a Kiliel Deathfic almost at completion, but damn the 500 word min! :(

Well this is the first time I've tried to quantify all this fic writing so here are the stats for the year:

Fandoms written for: 2- this is a new thing for me. I usually do one fandom at a time, so this straddling business is a bit weird.

Fic written: 40240 words for HTTYD fandom, 5015 for GotG fandom. Both long fic and one shots. I'm proudest of the longer pieces, but Starry Eyed Waif was so much fun to write. LOL

Like wow, that is a lot of views on Learning to Fly. It's still nowhere near Full Circle or Revolutionary stats, but hey. People are reading what I write. That's awesome. :D

Meta written: 2446 words for HTTYD (mostly posted on tumblr)

Goals for the new year: finish New Romantics and get cracking on the novel. Like, one thing about Learning to Fly and Treacherous: I wrote them like it was my job. I really have to start doing that for this novel, especially once kiddo number two is in preschool.
